The man in front of him took his breath away. If the venue had asked him to spell out his type, the VR man couldn’t have matched it more closely. His hair was dark, short, but thick, and framing his handsome face, with the front just a little spiked up. His eyes were blue and twinkling like sun on a deep ocean. His lips were so enticing Nate’s chest hurt from wanting to kiss them, and his body promised hard muscles under the gray business suit he wore like a model in a fashion magazine. The jacket swung open to reveal a black t-shirt as the man raised his arms and put them around Nate’s neck.

“Hi, babe. It’s great to see you.” The guy greeted Nate and then kissed him.

Nate’s entire body went into meltdown. The kiss was so real he grabbed the VR man and pulled him close, crushing against him.

The man returned the kiss but gradually drew away. He held Nate’s hand and brought him to a table outside the café. “Let’s get coffee. Did you eat yet? You look tired.” He reached out a hand and swept gentle fingertips down Nate’s cheek.

Surprised at the comforting gesture, Nate closed his eyes for a second to soak up the touch. He opened them and gazed at his VR boyfriend. “I’d like to hear about your day. I’m not hungry, coffee’s fine.” What will I call him? Does he have a name or do I just assign him one? Hell, he is gorgeous.

A server brought coffee. “How lovely to see you again, Jason, and you’ve brought Nate along tonight. The usual for you both?”

Nate blinked under the beaming smile from her. How does it know my name? Must read the credit card or Cory keys it in when he sets the room going.

She placed their cups on the table.

Jason. Nate smiled at his VR man. Yeah. I like that—a mythical name for an unreal guy.

At the head of a narrow corridor, a man lounged against the wall, one foot on the chair behind his desk and a smartphone clamped to his ear.

Nate hung around in front of the desk.

The man ended his call.

Nate’s gaze ranged over the bright polo shirt and ‘Splat’ logo. This man wore a name badge. Cory.

Cory gave him an apologetic smile as he slid the phone into his pocket.

Nate held out the card the nameless young woman had given him.

Cory took it, glanced at it. “I need you to fill in this waiver. It basically says we’re not liable for your health and accidents etc. Just print your name and sign it. Nothing ever happens, so it’s just a cover.” He gave Nate a pen and placed a small printed form on the desk in front of him from a tray of them in the corner.

Nate printed and signed the form without bothering to read it. What could happen?

Cory took the form and pushed it into a slot only just noticeable in the top of the desk, and then with a series of nods as he spoke, came around the desk to Nate. As if imparting secrets to Nate, the man leaned close. “Our sex experience has three levels. ‘Girl or boyfriend date.’ ‘One night stand date.’ ‘Intense.’ Of course, if it’s a different kind of pleasure you’re after, say eating your favorite foods without the fear of weight gain—”

Nate shook his head. His voice low, he cut off the guy’s speech. “Sex, with a man, handsome, believable.” Then worried the man would label him as a pervert if he went right for ‘Intense, Nate added, “’Boyfriend experience.’”

Cory stepped back. “Sure, but I don’t choose it. I just set the room going when you’re in it. You choose the experience on the computer provided.”

“No headset?”

Cory shook his head. “This is VR in the round—full-on holodeck stuff like in science fiction. It’ll cost you. The company’s spent a lot on the highest tech their specialists can build. Even in the ordinary VR courts, there’s never any break up of picture, no cyber sickness, the best sound. The private rooms are spectacular. Take my word for it. I’ll need your credit card. We’ll charge it when you leave the room automatically. Do you want to go ahead?”

Nate took a deep breath, brought out his wallet, handed over the plastic, and answered. “Sure.”

Cory took his credit card. “Follow me.”

Nate tried to see into the rooms he passed. Mirrored glazing blocked his view. He saw his own blurry wide-eyed face as he picked up his pace to follow Cory.

Cory stopped at a door. He inserted Nate’s credit card into a device situated at shoulder height on the wall next to the door. The door swung open.
“When you want to end the session, open the door. That will trigger the payment and you’ll be able to retrieve your card, until then it’s secure inside the system. Enjoy.”
Cory turned away.

Nate rushed into the room just in case the door closed before he’d entered. He popped his head around the doorframe to see Cory walking purposefully away, his smartphone again clasped to his ear.

Nate turned and entered the room. The door swung shut behind him. Surprised there was furniture dotted around the large space, Nate took in the tables and chairs, the bed, the low leather couch. He scanned the wall for the choices panel that Cory had mentioned. A computer screen, inlaid into the wall, lit up as if sensing Nate’s stare. He gazed around once again before he turned to the computer. Okay, well here goes. Start at level one. A touch screen, it responded to Nate’s cautious fingertip on the button next to ‘Boyfriend Experience.’
