A host stepped forward and greeted him. “Good evening, Tobias Mars. It’s good to see you again.”

A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. Anyone would think I was here every night.

“Thank you. Is Duet available?”

The host’s expression reflected regret. “I’m sorry but they’re booked. All the teams are. I do however have one delightful companion available. He works solo. He’s very beautiful.”

Tobias broke into a grin. The guy’s selling this one and yet he doesn’t have to. I just need someone, practically anyone. “He sounds perfect. Thank you.”

His host led him to a vacant room and left him. “Your companion will be along soon.” He gave a small bow.

If nothing else, the place has made me smile tonight. Amused, Tobias looked around, laughing softly. Only a few candles struggled to light the room, the sheer drapes unusually drawn, didn’t stir, which meant the tall windows were closed. Tobias pulled off his jacket and undershirt in one hurried move. He glanced at the low bed and desire filled him. Dante’s right. I do need this.

Valentine beamed at Dale. He shone his light on the delightful man before him. He wanted to enchant and spin a web of comfort around Dale. “Thank you.” Valentine allowed himself to imagine placing a strawberry between Dale’s lips and following the action with a gentle kiss. His eyes closed for a second as he brought to mind the special feel of skin on skin, his nose against a man’s cheek as their lips merged softly, and then he opened his eyes to gaze at Dale. I made a good choice for this visit. Already, this feels right. Valentine took a deep breath. The next twenty-four hours stretched ahead full of possibilities. When the server came to take their order, his was extravagant.

He played with the water glass, circling it on the tablecloth and leaving indent trails that reminded him of nebula he’d passed on his journey to the ground.

“Tell me all about yourself, Dale. What do you do? Where do you live?” Valentine thought this was a good way to start a conversation. It had worked in the past.

Dale visibly shrank away from the questions.

Panic gripped Valentine. He raced to fix whatever he’d done. “I’d love to know about you—anything, really.” Emotion must have flooded his expression. He felt the frown on his forehead and the burn of loss behind his eyes. He gazed on Dale as if Dale was already his lover.

Dale’s eyes darkened at him.

That means he likes me, doesn’t it? I hope so...

The story is set in the same SciFi fantasy city as last year’s release, The Dreamboat. Indigo Vaughn, the warlock head of security, features in the story along with a new cast of characters. When I wrote The Dreamboat, I already had the new characters in my head along with their story. Tobias Mars and Dante Pepper, the elite space pilots for the royal court, very nearly made an appearance in The Dreamboat, but because that story is about Indigo at last finding love, I decided they needed their own story. Once upon a time Dante and Tobias were close to becoming lovers, but Dante met Viridian and fell in love. Tobias has yet to meet his love when String of Pearls, opens. He’s a man of high integrity, handsome, caring, but also longing for love and sex. String of Pearls is his love story.
